It’s Time to Cool the Planet

Cutting greenhouse gases is no longer enough to deal with global warming, says Jamais Cascio. He argues that we also have to do something more direct—and risky.

JUNE 15, 2009

If we’re going to avoid climate disaster, we’re going to have start getting a lot more direct. We’re going to have to think about cooling the planet.

The concept is called geoengineering, and in the past few years, it has gone from being dismissed as a fringe idea to the subject of intense debates in the halls of power. Many of us who have been watching this subject closely have gone from being skeptics to advocates. Very reluctant advocates, to be sure, but advocates nonetheless.

Energy Conservation - A Prerequisite to Any On-site Renewable Energy Project

There appears to be an interesting phenomenon taking place across the country with regards to energy conservation and renewable energy. Both provide your recommended daily allowance of good, nutritious, environmental attributes, but over the past few years, attention at the breakfast table seems to be shifting towards a heavy diet of renewable energy, at the possible detriment of energy conservation.

Some may argue that we all need to increase our attention to alternative forms of energy, primarily renewable sources, in order for all of us to begin to assist our climate in doing its job of allowing us all to live each day. A noble cause by all standards, we all should be fully behind the massive swell of interest and enthusiasm generated by the Clean Green Energy wave sweeping the country. It's long in coming, and continues to blossom from all comers of the world.

Sustainable Architecture Draws Big Crowd To Lawrence Tech

Posted: Tuesday, 17 February 2009
Source: Great Lakes IT Report
by Matt Roush

Around 200 people who want a cleaner, greener Michigan gathered at Lawrence Technological University Tuesday night for a Great Lakes IT Report - LTU "Unwired" evening event.

Two Lawrence Tech faculty members, a green architecture expert and a green building owner all presented their perspectives on why buildings must soon get much more green -- and why it doesn't have to hurt that badly.

Glen S. LeRoy, dean of architecture at Lawrence Tech, said peer-reviewed science shows the surface of the Earth is warming, and at an increasing clip. That means more intense precipitation, a sea level rise of seven to 32 inches by 2100, and the potential displacement of 100 million coast-dwellers worldwide.

 Cleansing the Corporate Spirit

January 28, 2009

The country's highest office holders have declared that a "New Era" is upon us. But the foot soldiers must still battle the corporate actions that have diminished the nation's morale and economic standards.

Recessions are part of the laws of economics. But unethical conduct can stem from poor leadership. While today's economic woes were caused by a multitude of factors, a major catalyst has undoubtedly been poor decision making at the regulatory and corporate levels, and in some cases outright dishonesty. Financial markets have been rattled, which in turn has cut off funds to borrowers and sent equity values south.
