 Uni-Solar Gets Big GM Contract

Posted on 9/14/2007 11:46:40 AM

Auburn Hills-based United Solar Ovonic said Friday that it had been selected for one of the largest-ever solar power installations in corporate use.

Solar panels from the Energy Conversion Devices Inc. subsidiary will be installed on the roof of a GM plant in Fontana, Calif.

When completed in December, the installation will produce 1.3 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year, roughly the amount needed to power 500 homes for one year.

 Uni-Solar's Panels Shine At Emmys

Posted on 9/18/2007 6:46:09 AM

Auburn Hills-based United Solar Ovonic, a subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: ENER) said Monday that its flexible, lightweight thin-fil Uni-Solar photovoltaic panels helped generate electricity and shade the crowd during Sunday night's 59th annual Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

Uni-Solar PV laminates were installed on 2,700-square-foot of metal roofing manufactured to form a sun canopy. Several hundred attendees, who won a lottery for a seat in the bleachers, were able to view their favorite TV celebrities walking the red carpet while shielded from the sun.

Ford Building Bigger 'fumes To Fuel' Project

Posted on 9/10/2007 7:42:15 AM

The latest version of Ford Motor Co.'s "fumes-to-fuel" process to convert volatile organic compounds from production paint lines into electricity will be teamed with a 300kW molten carbonate fuel cell at the company's Oakville, Ont., assembly plant, AutoTech Daily reported Monday.

Danbury, Conn.-based FuelCell Energy Inc. will supply its DFC300MA stationary fuel cell pack for the program.

The traditional way to combat paint emissions is to concentrate them via rotary carbonwheels. The resulting concentrate is thermally oxidized at 1400 degrees Fahreneheit, which requires copious amounts of electricity and natural gas. With the fuel-to-fumes method co-developed by Detroit Edison, carbon beads are used to separate VOCs from the paint emissions. Ford says the fluidized bed used in the process improves concentration levels by 250 percent.
