During last year's Christmas season, the Tennessee Valley Authority delivered the bad news to its East Tennessee neighbors that one of its dikes had burst and released 5.4 million cubic yards of coal fly ash into the surrounding areas. While no one died, water tests indicated elevated levels of deadly pollutants that had killed hundreds of fish.
TVA, the nation's largest wholesale provider of electricity, is still battling the disaster and it is projected that it will spend at least $850 million cleaning it up. But now Congress and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are also examining the issue to determine if coal ash should be federally regulated under hazardous waste laws or if those rules should continue to be left to the states.

ESCANABA - Energy audits and energy-efficiency upgrades are a great way for businesses to save money as well as positively impact the environment, said a guest speaker at Escanaba's Economic Summit at city hall Wednesday.
"Energy audits are a great investment because you need to learn, in all these areas, where you can save," said Kevin Cook, president of G-ENERGY and a board member of Michigan Green.
Cook said right now is the "perfect storm of energy" because economics are really important, people are interested in the green movement, and businesses are seeking energy independence.

| Save-a-Watt2007 - Eight US Electric Utility Companies are Taking Action |
|
OBJECTIVE
Reduce utility carbon emissions by transforming energy efficiency into the " fifth fuel" . Eight US electric utility companies are taking action to increase the potential of energy efficiency to reduce carbon emissions. While we represent companies of different sizes, in different markets with different regulatory structures, we share a common belief that energy efficiency is the greatest untapped resource in addressing global climate change in the near-term. Over the next ten years, we will invest significant resources in energy efficiency measures. We commit to work with policymakers to remove regulatory barriers to utility investment in energy efficiency, which would permit greater utility investment over the long-term. We are also working with others throughout the electricity sector to create the Institute for Electric Efficiency (IEE), an organization that will share best practices in energy efficiency and regulatory models that support investments in energy efficiency. We expect the IEE to become the sustaining organization to broaden and deepen the electric industry's commitment to energy efficiency, beginning by convening a stakeholders' summit in the second quarter of 2008.
