December 16, 2008
ISHPEMING - The wind turbine that will power the Pioneer Bluffs Apartments is one step closer to the start of construction.
The bulk of the two truckloads of equipment, which included the long inner and outer shafts of the turbine, arrived in Ishpeming Monday.
"I'm hoping to assemble in January," said Bryan Zaplitny, CEO of MTI Energy Management, the downstate company which designed the turbine. "We're sticking with it," despite predicted cold temperatures.
When fully constructed, the turbine will stand 90 feet above the already-built tower and will feature an 85-foot sphere to house the turbine blades.

| Michigan Tech Gets $1.6 Million Grant |
|
Last year Michigan Technological University piloted a program in three Michigan high schools to give high school students a tantalizing taste of what real life is like working in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
It was such a resounding success that the National Science Foundation has climbed aboard, awarding Michigan Tech $1.6 million to expand its High School Enterprise Program to eight high schools in cities and towns all over the state.
The program's goal is to motivate high school students to pursue education and careers in the STEM fields, to help provide the skilled, technologically savvy workforce that Michigan, the nation and world need.

| Solar Light for Africa - Vote for Special Funding |
|
Sterling Planet is pleased to announce that its partner, Solar Light for Africa (SLA), has earned the right to compete for as much as $1.5 million in funding from American Express.
SLA is a semi-finalist in Members Project, the online initiative that invites American Express cardmembers to name the most worthy projects for funding.
With enough votes, SLA will provide 20,000 solar-powered lanterns to bring light to 100,000 people in rural, war-torn regions of Sierra Leone in West Africa. As thanks for voting, Sterling Planet will give you 1,000 kWh of 100% new wind energy. That's an $18.50 value, enough Green-e Energy certified wind to power the typical home for a month.
