WEEC: Coping With Escalating Energy Costs
Energy News
"Facility managers today must deal with spiraling energy costs. The price of crude oil leapt above $77 a barrel as diesel fuel, natural gas, and electric rates soared to new highs," according to Albert Thumann, P.E., C.E.M., C.C.P., G.B.E., Executive Director of the Association of Energy Engineers. "Businesses today cannot survive unless they develop a comprehensive energy cost reduction program. In addition, organizations realize that global climate change is a reality. Reducing greenhouse gases, applying energy-efficient technologies, and developing sustainable buildings makes good business sense."The World Energy Engineering Congress. WEEC, now in its 29th year, offers real solutions to reduce energy costs by utilizing the latest energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy strategies. The WEEC, held in the nation's capital for the first time, also addresses the opportunities and challenges resulting from the implementation of the Energy Policy Act (EPAct). The Congress will be held in co-operation with the Alliance to Save Energy, who will present the Summit on Energy Efficiency and An Evening with Stars of Energy Efficiency Awards dinner.

FEMWorks 2006: A significant new program. A new feature of this year's Congress is FEMWorks, which includes a comprehensive agenda addressing the implementation of EPAct for the governmental sector. Among the government agencies that have contributed to this outstanding program are the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. DOE's Federal Energy Management Program, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, the Veterans Administration, the National Geospace Intelligence Agency, and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

The Conference (20 PDH/2.0 CEU). WEEC 2006 is an unparalleled opportunity featuring 13 concurrent tracks presented by some 200 of the nation's foremost authorities in the energy disciplines, 11 intensive seminars, and three free facility tours, as well as free poster sessions in the exhibit hall. The results-oriented conference contains the most intensive examination of information on energy efficiency, combined heat and power, and distributed generation technologies. Among the key advantages of attending WEEC 2006:
  • The only conference and exposition devoted to energy efficiency and renewable energy with a 29-year proven track record of excellence.
  • The only conference and expo covering the commercial, institutional, industrial, and governmental marketplace.
  • The one conference selected by ENERGYSTAR to hold its industrial energy efficiency focus meetings and selected by the U.S. Department of Defense to hold its "All Hands On Meeting."
  • The only energy conference that includes three certification seminars and awards Professional Development Hours (PDH) and Continuing Education Units (CEU),which are recognized as meeting the requirement for Professional Engineering license renewal and can also be used to maintain AEE certifications.
Program Highlights. This year's outstanding schedule of conference sessions has been designed to cover both the conceptual and practical aspects of the energy areas that involve today's energy professionals, including: Implementation of the Energy Policy Act. The Alliance to Save Energy has developed an outstanding session entitled EPAct: Building Codes and Tax Incentives for Commercial Buildings. Attendees will find out how to take advantage of tax deductions for lighting technologies. Participants will also learn the status of appropriations to fund the energy efficiency portions of EPAct and get up to speed on implementation requirements and metering guidelines for government buildings.

High Performance and Sustainable Buildings. The experts at Texas A&M University have designed an informative program on how to simplify the building commissioning process and how to demonstrate savings as a result of commissioning projects. In other sessions, the U.S. EPA will demonstrate how to use ENERGYSTAR tools, how LEED case studies illustrate "Best Practices" for sustainable buildings, and reveal what's new in high-performance schools.
